FILE - In this Nov. 6, 2020, file photo, ballots are counted at the Allegheny County Election Division warehouse on the Northside of Pittsburgh. Democrats plan to move quickly on one of the first bills of the new Congress, which would set federal election standards. The For the People Act would require states to offer early voting, same-day registration and the option of absentee voting for all registered voters.
The legislation first introduced two years ago, known as the For the People Act, also would give independent commissions the job of drawing congressional districts, require political groups to disclose high-dollar donors, create reporting requirements for online political ads and, in a rearview nod at Trump, obligate presidents to disclose their tax returns.
Current plans would have the full House take up the bill as soon as the first week of February. The Senate Rules Committee would then consider a companion bill introduced in the Senate, and a tie vote there could allow it to move out of committee and to the floor as early as next month, said Klobuchar, who is expected to become the committee’s next chair.
Government and election officials repeatedly have described the election as the most secure in U.S. history. Even former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, a Trump ally, said before leaving his post that there was no evidence of widespread fraud that would overturn the result. In general, state election officials have been wary of federal voting requirements. But those serving in states led by Democrats have been more open and want to ensure Congress provides money to help them make system upgrades, which the bill does.
_Christina It's time for both parties to stop acting like entitled children and work together.
peppa_cats _Christina First they complain it’s a rigged election, then they shoot down ideas to change it
KarenSalitis _Christina Why would that be over reach? If it is a FEDERAL election then the FEDERAL gov. should be able to control how they are held so that ALL America have the same RULES which would eliminate how states suppress the vote. As usual if GOP can't cheat they know they can't win
UROCKlive1 _Christina of course they do
_Christina If you are a citizen, over 18 and can prove identity, then there should be no problem
UROCKlive1 _Christina God Speed Democrats! Get after the Republican Russians voter suppression.
_Christina In Canada, it’s the same for every province & territory. It’s clear, no questions asked. No conspiracies, no controversies, no drama, barely any wait, works pretty well here. Voting in the states is like doing your taxes. So many rules, exceptions, confusion, room to manipulate.
_Christina I am 100% for making it easier for ALL legal American citizens to vote. 1. VOTER ID 2. Automatic registration 3. Federal and state election day holiday 4. Paper ballots with a receipt 5. Public access to the counted votes so votes can be verified by the voter
SethAbramson _Christina Of course they would! We need one voice one vote! We need to get rid of the electoral college NOW!
SethAbramson _Christina Mixed thoughts. At first blush seems logical...but, this is a federation of states that have their own standards. It has worked for 200 years.
_Christina I call it, omg somebody realized what a shit show ,let's make it better.!
_Christina Yes, let's finish the work that Reconstruction should have completed.
SethAbramson _Christina Why is there no talk about using popular votes?
_Christina After the cheating lying manipulation removal of machines at USPS ballot boxes lies about mail-in voting rigging election fraud the GOP gets no say about honest foolproof procedures for future elections
_Christina 'easier to vote? sounds like socialism!' - Republicans
_Christina Drop the filibuster if necessary to pass this bill. “Republican opposition was fierce...McConnell labeled it the “Democrat Politician Protection Act” & said in an op-ed that Democrats were seeking to “change the rules of American politics to benefit one party.”
SethAbramson _Christina Let’s call it what it is: if everyone eligible to vote votes Republicans don’t get elected.
SethAbramson _Christina Federal elections should have consistent federal rules. State rules for state races. Meet in the middle.
_Christina I thought they were concerned about the election process in all these states, what happened?
_Christina you can't say its federal overreach for federal elections. Just another effort to keep power in the corruption of complex gerrymandering and legal entanglements.
_Christina 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 seriously! The Republicans just spent 3 months trying to tell us the states couldn’t be trusted ?!?!!!!! GOPHypocrisy
_Christina Of course the repugnants hate it... actual democracy is their Waterloo.
SethAbramson _Christina Lack of uniform rules was essentially the argument ('equal protection') the GOP justices made in Bush v. Gore to justify installing Bush as the president, but they also made it clear in a footnote that uniformity only matters when its absence screws over a GOP candidate.
_Christina 2)45 catapulted the nationaldebt into the stratosphere & Repubs did nothing to stop it. now 46 aims to help our citizens facing eviction, hunger, joblessness & Repubs against it. The GOP is no longer a viable political entity, rife with hypocrites, rightwingnuts, greed, ego.
_Christina 1) federal standards for federal elections? overreach? anything the new regime says Repubs will find a way to counter, complain, try to distract from the real business of Congress: impeachment, passing a stimulus
_Christina That headline is incredibly tone deaf.
_Christina Of course the Democrats want to make it easier to vote nationally. Easier to vote illegally that is.
SethAbramson _Christina Oh , but challenging another State’s election process and wanting all those votes thrown out because you don’t like the result, is NOT overreach? Gimme me a frickin’ break!
_Christina Of course GOP repub's do, they like picking they're voters instead voter's picking who they want to represent them, if gerrymandering was ended, everyone voted there would be no Seditious Insurrectionist repub's. These Mooks would have to find real jobs.
SethAbramson _Christina So they just want a repeat of the mess they created in 2020? GOP doesnt care for you or your right to vote. Probably disdain actually.
SethAbramson _Christina Democrats want more people to vote. Republicans know more people voting is the death nail of their party.
_Christina Interesting these Republicans didn’t see it as federal overreach when Trump and company were trying to overturn the results certified by states with no evidence of fraud
SethAbramson _Christina It's not overreach to overturn state elections from the federal level.
_Christina Everyone should want this for federal elections...it would stop the nonsensical chase after state officials that happened this time.
_Christina Because of course
_Christina Trying to make sure all citizens can vote is 'federal overreach'... interesting
_Christina Isn’t what they did overreach.
SethAbramson _Christina Having uniform nationwide voting rules is a bad thing? Clearly Republicans want different rules to continue to suppress the vote and manipulate election results in their favor. This is a losing long term strategy.
_Christina radio gaga
_Christina Because they are afraid they’ll never win another election again!
_Christina 'Republicans call it federal overreach.' The same republicans who repeatedly tried to have [certified] state election results thrown out? The same republicans who repeatedly tried to disenfranchise millions of voters? The same republicans who don't like state elections? Wow.
_Christina Without voter suppression there wouldn't be a Republican Party
_Christina Why? They there is so much fraud and irregularities..
SethAbramson _Christina Wait, so Republicans, who wanted to go as far as the Supreme Court to overrule the will of the states in a failed effort to overturn an election now see an attempt to standardize elections as federal overreach? lol
_Christina One party wants to make it easy for everyone to vote. One party wants to make it difficult to vote and actively tries to disenfranchise voters. Says it all, don't it?
_Christina Republicans want to suppress voting because they don't want us voting unless it's for GOP candidates.
SethAbramson _Christina All about that suppression, right Republicans?
SethAbramson _Christina This is federal overreach? Not voting to overturn the electoral college but... this
_Christina Are these the same Republicans in the federal Congress who tried to invalidate several states’ certified election results?
_Christina the same federal government that just had over 100 people vote to not certify the president they didnt want?
_Christina We are one country! If you go to Germany, the entire country votes the same way. If you go to Austria, the entire country votes the same way. If you go to Spain , the entire country votes the same way. If you go to Iran, they vote the same way in the whole country.
_Christina If you’re over 18 & a citizen- you should be able to easily vote.
_Christina
