The debate over transgender athletes, particularly in girls’ and women’s sports, has become a legislative flashpoint in statehouses across the country, as states that ban them from competition have been met with threats from bodies like the National Collegiate Athletic Association to relocate events in response.
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican, on Wednesday signed a bill preventing athletes from competing in categories different than their biological sex at birth, making it the sixth state to put such a law on the books. Republican legislators in more than two dozen states have introduced similar bills, including one in Florida that passed Wednesday and is awaiting the signature from Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican.
The bans, which primarily impact transgender girls and women, typically apply to competitions at publicly funded institutions at the high school and college level. It's a tough question without a great answer. Generally, I don't think the supposed advantage is absolute, but on a case-by-case basis there may be an unfair advantage. Co-ed sports may be an option, but women may have lower representation on many teams.
