A war between China and Australia is not imminent. So, why is the Australian government's line so aggressive?

Australia long needed a public debate about China, but politicians were loth to broach one. Even as China’s power and reach grew under President Xi Jinping, Australia’s leaders, and voters, were happy striking an awkward balance in which it got its prosperity from China—through vast exports of iron ore and coal and imports of Chinese students—and its security from an America-led order. But, given Chinese rage, having it both ways is no longer an option.

Yet if war is not actually imminent, which it is not, then the government line is not helpful. Natasha Kassam of the Lowy Institute, a Sydney think-thank, argues in thethat while the reasons for talking about regional challenges are sound, “there are also real risks…from causing panic and hysteria.” Not even Taiwan talks of imminent war.

What is more, the line from Canberra poisons a wider domestic discourse over China, in which those arguing for engagement, nuance or open debate are shouted down. A furore erupted when Jane Golley, a prominent academic at the Australian National University, argued that debates about China were being stifled by a “dominant narrative”. She was perhaps unwise to choose the topic of China’s brutal treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, which she does not contest, as her example.

Koalas don't fight 😜

War between China and Australia will be quick and QUAD would be irrelevant. Has to put the ego behind and work towards peace in the region. Already China has gripped its influence on Aus by flooding with investments and immigrants, they can press the button any time.

Because their white

Because China literally owns Australia's entire industry and has made itself essential in the overall market and it flexes that power to no end. The Ausies are actually in a terrible position.

More Australians will be angry with China since they've stopped buying from them and lot of businesses will be affected. It's silent withdrawal of a trade partner.

Are you joking? To challenge a nuclear power?

China is not to be trusted period.

Distraction politics

Because the Chinese Communist regime is a threat to liberal democracy worldwide

I think we might find Australia's tone far more conciliatory should the Chinese terminate their iron ore contracts, the revenue from which is the only thing presently keeping Oz afloat and their $167bn budget deficit somewhat manageable...

Australia has gradually realized the threat of the CCP to the Australian market. They may already know that the CCP is eating a European lunch.

🇦🇺 Australia 🇦🇺, am with australia 🌏

Personal take: Australia seems to have insight in the origin of the virus and got really angry on China. I mean not just angry but finally realised China is THE enemy of the free world. Somehow seems they still cannot share the insight.

'Mr Morrison and his team “are addicted to the drug of ‘standing up to China’.” That may play well at home It is costing us $5bils n crippled our wine export He should think abt his big mouth

Come on guys! What are you thinking?

Australian government's line is not as aggressive as China.

It’s called testosterone mate and we have a lot of it, we don’t get walked on by any country especially them

Because Aussies are dying to die for Taiwan! White trash of Asia!

I think Australia has shown great forbearance at CCP meddling in our internal affairs. For a country that demands no comment on its domestic policies it sure likes to interfere in Australia. And China invented a trade war out of nothing.

Maybe because a country like Australia has more balls than its larger allies

Did the Chinese government write this tweet?

That is what they said about Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

I still can't get over the upside down sickle nose

Who knows but let them deal with that.

They're dumb.

Insane framing

China 🇨🇳is dangerous they are the greatest danger to all China 🇨🇳Xi CCP Should be held for crimes against humanity Uighers 2 Million Taiwan Hong Kong Virus 3 Million dead

China is the coolest country in the world. We don’t like dealing with countries that don’t know how to respect each other. They shoot while making our money. Australian politicians are really disgusting. Australia bites everywhere like a mad dog

你怎麼不說中共先做了什麼激進的行為的呢?

Economist pretended they don't know the truth,Australia as a running dog of America have to follow every instructions from America ,and holding China rise is the national strategy of America . it leaves Australia no choices as there are leash on Scott Morrisons neck.

Australia should’ve thought before speaking nonsense. China is the world’s largest economy. It was buying from Australia as kindness. But It does not require Australia. It has replaced all of what that tiny piss ant penal colony provided from other nations

Hope Xi sees this bro
