Memorial-Day

Army Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart was killed in action in Somalia in 1993.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Randall Shughart was 35 when he was killed in action during the infamous Black Hawk Down mission in Somalia in 1993.

Benches and picnic tables dot the grassy area on either side, and cars traveling over the bridge can view a sign designating it as the Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart Memorial Bridge.“He was quiet, and not excitable, but he liked what he did and he was good at it,” his brother Michael Shughart told PennLive on Wednesday. “Not many people know of him anymore and many don’t know what he did.”

“He wasn’t there alone. There are a lot of guys overseas doing something for somebody every day,” Shughart said. “I was in the Army, and if you’re willing to join, you’re willing to die at it.”
