Alabama's fourth-largest city stopped taking victims of medical emergencies to hospitals on Wednesday afternoon because local emergency rooms and intensive care units were overwhelmed with Covid cases, a Mobile Fire and Rescue Department spokesman toldAmbulance rescues have been shut down in Mobile, Alabama, since there is nowhere to take patients,The fire department in Mobile, Ala., which has a population of almost 200,000, issued a"Critical Mass Level Zero" alert Wednesday.

First responders are still able to render aid to people suffering medical emergencies, but hospital transport is unfeasible due to emergency rooms being overwhelmed with Covid patients, according to Steven Millhouse of Mobile Fire and Rescue. ICU space has been pushed beyond capacity in the state of Alabama, with state Health Association President Dr. Don Williamson tellingAs of Tuesday evening, Williamson said there were 1,568 patients needing intensive care in Alabama, but only 1,557 designated ICU beds, which are largely filled by unvaccinated Covid-19 patients.

Mobile County is one of the hardest-hit in the state, accounting for more than 500 of the roughly 3,600 new cases Alabama has been averaging over the past seven days, according to aOnly two counties, Dale and Escambia, are adding more new cases per capita, but those counties aren't nearly as populous as Mobile County.“Our hospital healthcare system is completely overwhelmed and overloaded,” Millhouse said, though he believes the delay in ambulance service is “just a temporary thing.
