DPS Director Steve McCraw gives a statement during a press conference after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott toured the Houston lab on Thursday, July 14, 2022.An organized crime group has obtained thousands of replacement Texas driver licenses in a scheme aimed at helping Chinese nationals who are in the country illegally, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw told lawmakers Monday.
The crime group, which McCraw did not identify, obtained the replacement licenses by pulling Texans’ personal information from the dark web and using it to answer questions, like their mother’s maiden name or the first vehicle they owned, to gain access to their online state accounts. Accessing the state accounts allowed the group to fraudulently send replacement licenses “to an address of their choosing,” McCraw explained. The group reportedly targeted Texans with “Asian-sounding names” who were “similar look-alikes” to Chinese nationals who would assume their identity.
How is that possible in such a 'law & order' state like Texas?
