Imágenes satelitales analizadas por The Associated Press parecían mostrar la construcción de un nuevo complejo de tiendas de campaña cerca de Jan Yunis, en la Franja de Gaza, mientras el ejército de Israel sigue dando pistas sobre su ofensiva contra la ciudad del Rafah, en el sur del enclave. Las imágenes tomadas por Planet Labs PBC y analizadas por la AP muestran el complejo en plena construcción el 16 de abril al oeste de Jan Yunis.

La campaña israelí en Gaza comenzó luego de un ataque sin precedentes de Hamás sobre el sur de Israel el 7 de octubre en el que murieron unas 1.200 personas, en su mayoría civiles, y otras 250 fueron tomadas como rehenes. Según Israel, los insurgentes tienen aún alrededor de un centenar de cautivos, además de los restos mortales de más de 30 más. La guerra se ha cobrado la vida de más de 34.100 palestinos y dejó más de 77.
