Pro-abortion rights activists rally in Miami after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the right to abortion on June 24, 2022. President Biden’s reelection campaign is calling Florida “a key state” and vowing to target voters there as part of a spring ad campaign. College Democrats are handing out condoms emblazoned with the words “protect abortion in Florida.” Students are giving women tulips to raise awareness and register voters.
As of the end of February, over 5.2 million voters in Florida were registered Republicans, compared to nearly 4.4 million Democrats. A large segment, however, is registered with no party affiliation. In light of Monday’s rulings, Democrats likely see an opportunity to mobilize both those who identify with the party and the 3.5 million voters potentially stuck somewhere in between.
Democrats are at least initially painting the November vote as a stark choice for women in Florida and elsewhere. By the time voters head to the polls, the state’s new six-week ban will have been in effect for six months. The ruling effectively cut off“This is one issue where Democrats, Republicans, and Independents agree: our private medical decisions are none of the government’s business,” Florida Senate Democratic leader Lauren Book said in a statement.
The abortion rulings — as well as a third decision Monday putting recreational marijuana on the ballot — have energized a moribund Democratic party in Florida. Democrats have elected just one statewide candidate in the past decade. Republicans have also dominated in the state House, holding a majority there since 1992. The last Democrat elected as governor was Lawton Chiles, who died in office in 1998.
