The Houston area will need more charging stations to handle expected growth of EVs, according to a new report.Electric vehicles could account for half of Houston’s new car and light-duty truck sales by 2030. That’s in line with national projections, and it is the vision of Evolve Houston, a nonprofit coalition of civic, business, and academic leaders who seek to accelerate clean transportation in Houston.
Here's the good news: In March 2021, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator reached the milestone of 100,000 public charging ports nationwide. Even more charging stations are on the way. The $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill that President Biden signed into law in November includes $7.5 billion to jump-start a national EV charging network. The goal is to have five times as many public vehicle charging stations by 2030.
Evolve Houston is working with municipalities to ensure adequate numbers of public charging stations. With private, municipal and corporate stakeholders all in various stages of implementation, it’s an expensive moving target.
