At first glance, it appeared Equifax and Facebook got their comeuppance this week for privacy screw-ups that endangered hundreds of millions of Americans.as much as $700 million to resolve federal and state investigations into the 2017 hack that compromised the privacy of more than 147 million people. Cambridge Analytica scandalHere’s the thing, though. A quick crunching of the numbers reveals that Equifax is paying only about $4.75 per person it exposed to hackers and scammers.
And can I just say how cheesed I was to learn that Begor’s predecessor as CEO of the credit reporting agency, Richard Smith, the guy who was at the helm when all our info spilled into the ether, will pocketIt was Smith who was in charge when Equifax failed to install a software patch that could have protected all that data. He’s the guy ultimately responsible for the entire mess.-- and a $24-million pension.
Beyond official oversight, though, the real question here is teeth. How do we make sure CEOs take people’s privacy seriously? What’s needed are comprehensive privacy rules that level the playing field, if not tip the balance in consumers’ favor.A new privacy law set to take effect in California at the beginning of next year will allow state residents to find out what kinds of information a business has collected.also permits consumers to request that a company delete any personal information it holds and to opt out of the sale of such info.

Davidlaz Smh, I have been dealing with identity theft for years now. When it happens to you- you’ll learn fast how these companies don’t even help you get back on track.
Davidlaz Yeah. I get that you’re saying that the amount Equifax is liable for isn’t enough. And I definitely agree with you there.
Davidlaz Also. How many people are going to bother to check if their info was breached, let alone file a claim- Bet it’s less than half of those affected. I’ve been spreading the word to all my friends. Only 2 have checked so far. Both of them discovered their info was breached.
Davidlaz 3 of 3: Plus you need to factor in how many people are opting for the additional 6 years of credit monitoring by Equifax. After you do that, then you will know the full amount that Equifax is paying people.
Davidlaz 2 of 3: You also must factor in Equifax’s cost to give us free credit monitoring from all 3 agencies for 4 years.
Davidlaz Your figures are way off-base. You can’t do straight arithmetic to figure out how much people are going to get cuz most people aren’t eligible for the $125.
Davidlaz Check your eligibility.
but lawyers rake it in
Davidlaz Wow, it's so hard to picture an unusual amount like $4.75 without an example.

Davidlaz Google's got their 'comeuppances' over the past few wks, between their whistle-blower executives ratting them out for collusion in election meddling, and the study showing how they shifted votes to Hillary in 2016 - and could 15-20 million votes in 2020:

Davidlaz BUT DEAR Los Angeles Times ! EQUIFAX HAS BROKEN HER FIDUCIARY TRUST AND DUTY TO ALL HER CLIENTS THROUGHOUT AMERICA AND SHOULD BE HOLD LIABLE TO THE MAXIMUM FINE BY LAW. IT'S TIME FOR THESE COMPANIES TO PUT AMERICAN'S SAFETY AND THEIR PRIVACY FIRST.

ToBeSafeNSound Davidlaz Equifax should be bankrupted for allowing millions of ppl's data to be stolen. Too bad Trump decided to kill off the Consumer Protection Agency to give all his corrupt donors free rein to charge the poor high interest without fear of enforcement or regulations.
Davidlaz How is that even just compensation for having your identity stolen from you?
Davidlaz Equifax, Like FaceBook, play with a completely different set of rules and regs. Some regular person does that they end up in a hole at a Supermax awaiting execution for Treason. 💯
