The Columbus Zoo is expanding its security with the construction of a new $1.4 million Guest Entry Security Pavilion.

These two new scanners are not metal detectors. Instead of scanning for metal, they're AI-based systems that look for compositions that could be weapons.

"Most folks won't even know they're walking through as they come into the zoo," said Steven Langton, the director of Safety and Security for Columbus Zoo. Langton said people won't have to take things out of their pockets or bags unless an alarm is triggered. The system has already been in place at Zoombezi Bay for two years. Columbus City Schools and the Columbus Crew use similar EVOLV systems for security.

Once completed, visitors coming in from the parking lot will go through the scanners based at the Guest Entry Security Pavilion in front of the turnstiles. A contingent of security staff will be available at the pavilion to help guests through.Stay Connected
