By registering ships in the Bahamas and other countries, cruise companies can avoid U.S. laws and taxes. Now the Coast Guard says they should seek medical aid from those countries, rather than rely on the U.S.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been working with cruise companies to bring people off of ships stricken with the coronavirus — but a new bulletin also says foreign-flagged ships should not rely on U.S. help.

"Medical facilities in the Port of Miami, for example, are no longer accepting MEDEVAC patients due to limited hospital capacity and it is expected that neighboring counties will follow suit," wrote Jones, whose Coast Guard district includes Florida, Puerto Rico, Georgia and South Carolina. Foreign-flagged ships are the norm in the cruise industry. By registering ships in the Bahamas, Panama and other countries, cruise companies can avoid U.S. taxes as well as employment and environmental laws. But now, the Coast Guard is telling those companies that their ships should seek medical care in the countries where they are registered, rather than rely on the U.S.

"Seventeen ships are lined up at Port Miami and Port Everglades, with more than a dozen others hovering miles offshore. Most have only crew aboard, but several still carrying passengers are steaming toward South Florida ports. In

That’s why we need them to pay the taxes after this crises is over

Great. They avoid paying their taxes. That’s the best thing the Trump administration has done.

They also avoid getting bailed on by our government LOL they are screwed.

Or here is an idea...STOP BOARDING PASSENGERS and HALT ALL CRUISES!!!!

TychoTithonus live by the loophole, die by the loophole

Well, they also go by their cleanliness laws. One of the cruise ships sounded familiar.... looks like a pattern. Note the date - doesn't learn a lesson.

Regardless of where the ship is registered we need to help those people. We are the greatest country in the world let’s show it. Talk the talk so walk the walk

Finally some accountability....make them register in the US or send them to their Flag Countries.

Makes sense

JenniferJJacobs Tow 'em out to the deep ocean and TORPEDO THEM. Or better yet, make their CEOs and shareholders spend a month on them BEFORE they are cleaned, THEN torpedo them.

JenniferJJacobs Good! May their ships sink in hurricanes docked at those countries.

JenniferJJacobs It’s about time!

I'm sure Panama is preparing a bailout for Carnival.

Need to test people! Cruise ships and US Navy! TestBacklog What are you DOING POTUS? Why can only New Yorkers get test results? realDonaldTrump POTUS HouseGOP SenateGOP TheDemCoalition CNN CuomoPrimeTime NYGovCuomo ChrisCuomo

JenniferJJacobs Makes sense.

JenniferJJacobs Yeah! Stick it to those evil corporations by making Americans get medical help in third world countries in the Carribean and thus causing them to die! Good job, Trump!

Yes that's the law.

Who ever gets on a ship after January, it’s their own fault. If your not watching the news or your head is stuck in the sand, you just have no common sense. This has been going on now 3 months or longer. I have not left my house for 2 months. Stay Home

Coast Hiars FTW 🤘

I agree with the US Coast Guard.

Kookieduck What then is US citizenship worth to passengers on those ships? Bupkus.

THEREALJHOBA

Those passengers are probably better off getting healthcare in other countries. The Republicans want Americans to sacrifice their lives for Wall Street. I would prefer staying in the Bahamas to that any day.

Well, that sucks for everyone on the ships that have nothing to do with the corporate tax dodger model... The countries they are registered to cannot handle it. It's unfortunate that they are being turned away but, help simply is not available. The pool is at capacity.

Amen

If they pay no U.S. taxes and avoid U.S. laws, absolutely they shouldn't receive help from the U.S. taxpayers- but are there Americans on the cruise?

That's cold. Any port in a storm you know. HumanityFirst

Keep the cruise ships away from Florida covid COVID19 COVIDー19 COVIDIOTS COVID2019

This would be fine if it was just the cruise companies suffering. But there are actual people on board who could die. No bailouts to the company, agreed! But let these people disembark and get them into quarantine!

AMEN! If you seek advantage outside of the US, don't come whinging back for the benefits. I'm sure that it's better in the Bahamas!

Eppie888 The two Holland America ships heading for Florida are Carnival Corporation ships. Carnival is registered in Florida. Florida Gov wants to turn them away.

Good they should go back to their origin country of registration! This should teach them a lesson. CarnivalCruise CruiseShip

We should at least let the United States citizens home.

Absolutely. And no bail out either.

100% agree! Send all ships back to the ports where the ship disembarked!

Absolutely. Good for the Coast Guard.

I saw a cruise ship leaving Miami last week? In fairness, I couldn’t see if anyone was on it, but who would take a cruise now?

We need to reverse this idea that it’s “American” to avoid taxes.

laloalcaraz Now do Jeff Bezos

I agree that the cruise ships that are not registered in the USA should not receive financial help from the USA . Let’s take care of USA companies and people first

I am sorry but when you wont pay taxes, expect bailouts, like its as natural as breathing air. I agree with Coast Guard, I can't help but think every person on that cruise went on knowing pandemic in world. Why would you go on a petri dish during pandemic? IgnoranceKills

Agreeing with the Coast Guard on this one.

This is so sad. The passengers and crew are the only ones who will suffer. America. You make me sad.

Send them a bill, a big one.

Yeah 👏😄 You tell em! Maybe that'll change those Countries policies. Allows them pollute more too.

Better get moving to Nassau...

Yep!

How about we don’t give them bailout money but do treat their passengers with compassion by allowing their home countries to allow for transportation from our ports with suitable safeguards.

Well said. They pocket the money when there’s feast, and rely on the US when there’s famine. That’s not right.

Why the hell were these cruises going out 2-3 weeks ago? They are liable!!

It is not about the companies, but the people on board.

stacyherbert When old sovereigns attack!

TCI_News

YES!

Yup, I fully support this.

Sounds right. Alternatively they can pay 100x to get the services.

exacto

stacyherbert 🙈🙉🙊

YES.

What about US citizens on these cruises?

A vote for Biden is a vote for Trump Bidengonnalose

stacyherbert Agreed.

jlbenitocorres 👆

Yeah but will they say that to Betsy deVos when she wants to grift their help for her foreign flagged yachts?

Liberia and Panama

You can't abandon American lives. That is not who we are.

cas23 That’s the wrong approach. Medical aid is humanitarian. Disappointed in some of the comments here.

stacyherbert Correct. Let them dock in the Bahamas.

Multimillion dollar company, they have the money.

stacyherbert Every time I hear a story like this it reminds me of...

stacyherbert Good

Pay to play!

American passengers could get help in America, perhaps the crew should get theirs elsewhere? Idk...there aren’t any easy answers.

Exactly.

It’s really US inions they are avoiding. Read the Jones act, then repeal it.

Gdad1 I agree.

Makes absolute sense. Tit for tat.

Why? Don't their lives matter?are they from another planet?

uscoastguard has it right, each & every way. These ships are foreign vessels with no allegiance to the USA so they are not entitled to our (Americans) taxed financed resources.

They should play the Amazon game, American all the way but no taxes...

This is common knowledge...and I am sympathetic to the people on the cruise, but the fact that the cruise companies avoid our laws, save taxes, and a biggie, hire most of their crew from those other countries....am sympathetic to Coast Guard decision....

Sorry but that seems appropriate. They prolly will be better off there anyway, those countries prolly have National Health Care.

Agreed. But right now we need to let the passengers disembark where they planned to disembark and get them the medical help they need. A cruise vacation shouldn’t result in a death sentence.

6000 stuck at sea

ChaddScott Great idea!

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

The staff need help, not the cruise lines. The employees must pay their own way to where the cruise is docked, and they are not paid. They work for tips only.

RIP cruise industry

🙌🏽

Medical aid to humans, yes. Financial aid to the cruise companies that dodge US taxes, hell no

American exceptionalism indeed.

There are human beings at risk here.

Sounds right. Unless they suddenly want to chose to register ships in the US for tax purposes going forward, but i dont see that happening.

Yes.

We should be helping these people

I have no sympathy for cruise companies, BUT the passengers are American citizens and the staff don't deserve a death sentence! It is outrageous for the US gov to deny them entry. The virus is already here and a cruise ship is incapable of caring for critically ill people.

Agree. Go back to where the ship is registered.

I understand the anger over their flags from low tax, low regulation nations, but the majority of their passengers are Americans, and it is to them, not the cruise lines, that we owe whatever help that can be provided.

Are there US citizens who need help on those ships?

Wow, bet they never saw that coming...

🐱💭 I bet their accountants never saw that coming!! USCoastGuard ⚓

DarylSurat Provide aid, then bill them for it.

Go Coastguard!

If the cruise ship company is not based in the United States they do not deserve a bailout. The passengers on these ships deserve to be taken ashore and helped regardless of where the ship is moored.

MurdockResists Greedy capitalism has brought us to this. They’re prioritizing corporations over human lives. Govt. had no problem handing bailouts to the cruise industry, even though they pay almost no taxes. Now, neither wants to spend a dime to save passengers. Treat them, settle 💰 later.

Curb your cruise ship Directed by Larry David

We let our American travelers who traveled by plane to come back home. Why in the world would we not let other, taxpaying amd health insurance paying Americans back into their country. We still have room at many medical facilities within our country. Fly them in as needed.

MichaelAlexPen No. A tax issue is a true complaint but the Coast Guard is there to save lives. You do not ask someone for their last years filing prior to helping them.

Bingo.

Good

That's horseshit rules of the sea says give help to all even an enemy

I think this is not a good precedent. If cruising, say, Iceland, do you want sick Americans having to be transported to Bahamas for treatment? Sick passengers should have access to advanced medical care ASAP and then be repatriated to their country. That’s what travel ins is for.

Agreed

WHY are cruise lines still running I thought it was essential travel only?

Reading all these replies is disgusting. Does anyone have any compassion for anyone else but themselves?! When did America become such heartless country. We are so better than that.

Davidlaz Good deal. Long overdue.

Harsh. But fair.

LancelotLinkSpy Why aren't we demanding that this administration help the NAVY that is calling out for HELP? WHY?

Nice

Sounds reasonable to me.

That’s no way to treat the consumers. Shame on this greed!

Good get fucked

it all comes home to roost

kingmanmarie39 They should go to their countries where they are registered.

Just like illegal immigrants

Good!!!!

On the one hand, I can't disagree with this, at least as it relates to a bailout, but as it relates to the passengers, a good share of whom are Americans but even if they're not, our nation's values, secular and religious, call for humanity, decency, and medical care.

I don’t get it. The companies aren’t ultimately seeking medical aid. The passengers are. And, many of the passengers on cruises to/from American ports are American.

Help the people but not the foreign cruise ship companies. I know the POTUS went on record saying he supports the bailout of cruise ships because it is a lucrative industry but if they don't want to pay taxes, then give them no tax $. Help the people though.

Don't wanna pay taxes? You don't get the taxpayers help. As it should be with all these damn companies who don't pay taxes and are basically subsidized by the American people.

Foreign flag ships avoiding taxes and regulation shouldn't be the standard applied here. The number of US citizens aboard the ships who are at risk, weighed against the risk of bringing them ashore for treatment should be the reasoning behind our policy.

There are Americans onboard these ships. We are affording them less support than Americans stuck in foreign countries. Beyond that, these are people who need help - who have we become as a nation? This is not a moment we'll be proud of. HALcruises

TXVB Good.

First: we do not need cruise companies. They are harmful to the planet. Second of all, if they don't pay US taxes then they can harbor elsewhere.

Darn right!

You’d think these circumstances WE’RE ALL IN would tech us a lesson in this degree of SELFISHNESS. This isn’t a corporate issue, it’s not a money issue, it’s a HUMAN CRISIS.

We need to help the people trapped on those ships AND hold the cruise industry accountable for flying foreign flags to avoid US taxes. We shouldn't be monsters while trying to do the right thing. Just hold the rich accountable, is that so hard?

Right, they are not American ships.

About time. Want to be foreign then go foreign.

Thank God for the Coast Guard! 👏🏼

Now Congress should tell the U.S. corporations who pay no taxes that they will not get bailed out. And that they can not use our infrastructure (roads to ship products, law enforcement to protect their property, ect.) until they pay their fair share.

Why is anyone still on a cruise ship?

This is awesome. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

I agree. Fuck this industry. While Americans act like 10 cent millionaires, the shop workers make maybe $6/ hr. And let’s not even start on the waste they pump into the oceans.

A Commander in Chief could direct the Coast Guard to take humanitarian action.

Well done!

Maybe people will finally see why we need taxes and the so-called deep state.

Absolutely. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Good.

The US coast should land on the ships and evacuate the US Citizens ! That’s about it ! If the other countries are going to lock their borders then USA can also lock their borders

As well they should....

4truthnjustiz Bout mf time gdammit

Yes absolutely, the US coast guard is correct! Now the corporate greed will haunt these mafuckers! These cruise liners were trying to be slick, now they will pay by going bankrupt! Serves them right! CarnivalCruise CruiseNorwegian RoyalCaribbean

I understand the company is avoiding taxes, but the people on the ship need help. We need to value the people, many who are US citizens, above the cruise companies.

Damn straight. Got your fingers caught in the cookie jar now. Can’t have it both ways.

Yooo bringin the hammer down

As they should

That sounds all good and revengy, unless you're one of the American citizens that are not going to be let back in to your own fucking country. We let these ships register in the Bahamas, fix that.

Yep.

This argument has some merit, but, since the passengers are mostly American citizens then American health insurance and system is responsible for treating them.

Tell them to shove off!

GreenBiotechie Yup! “Flags of convenience” should have consequences.

Makes sense to me.

They can dock at Mar-a-Lago.

Uh oh

Are they not american citizens on those ships?

MichaelShurkin JackSussek I can see a huge realignment of tax regulation and registration of companies coming after this. Add to that people finally accepting that remote working actually works for a lot of employees.

JamesJJRyan They should also rely on those countries for financial support, as should the companies that pay taxes in Ireland, Luxembourg, Cayman Islands, etc.

Good to see it.

malbruja69 The Cruiseship industry registered their ships abroad to avoid labor laws and US taxes. Now they're crying for a federal bailout. NO! Technically they are foreign operators. America owes the industry nothing!!

Don't come to the US looking for a bailout. We've got our own problems to deal with and at the end of the day, a cruise ship is the definition of frivolous luxury item/expense. I'd rather put food on the tables here.

100% agreed. Otherwise, they should re-register the ships with the U.S. and pay all the back taxes they have avoided before being granted any help.

And they shouldn’t get any American taxpayer money for a bailout either!!!!

Exactly

Not a single dollar should go to tax dodging cruise companies. Let them sink. They are the biggest polluters by far and are cesspools of disease.

Lol lololol maybe don’t book tickets on a line registered in Lower Sloberbia.

I agree. You can’t avoid our taxes and seek our help when convenient. Pay up! noBailOutForCruiseShips

Darn tootin.

In theory and callousness, I say yes. BUT we would be hurting the people on the cruise and they did nothing to deserve this. Time to set rules for the future. Companies can't keep acting recklessly and expect the tax payer to bail them out.

julia_omalley Agree 100000000000000000000%

I agree... BRAVO...

👍 sounds like a great idea 🤓

Expect to get aid from your home country if you are avoiding America! Or register in US and PAY YOUR FREAKING TAXES!

Seek bailouts from those countries too.

What does that mean for the less than smart Americans who are on those ships? I guess govt can't tell people (americans) that cruises aren't allowed?

This is inhumane. We have become a selfish, disgraceful people.

These cruise ship situations become even more like Avenue 5 on HBO everyday.

Totally agree.

Hahahah fk yeah!!! Send all these companies that are not US Base!!!!! Finally someone is using their head

Yep, have to say.. I agree

Serves them right.

Should be the same way at NPR and their 75 million welfare check!

Objectively that makes sense, but on a humanitarian basis it looks callous and will result in more deaths.

While I agree with this in terms of corporate bailouts, many of those passengers are Americans, and the ships sailed to/from U.S. ports. This is barbaric.

They said one of the ship was floating around w/ dead passengers on board. That is crazy, I blame the cruise co., & yes they need to go where they are registered to unload the dead & sick.

Thank you USCG -let the cruise lines spend their billions figuring out the problem. They kept their ships going for a profit despite virus warnings

michaelpachter Dam right they should. F these cruise lines. Hope they all go bankrupt

I absolutely agree!

Totally agree.

it's a sad day.

Yep

touche

Lessons learned...

MarfanSyndrome1 This sounds right but it isn’t! What if your parents were on one of those cruise ships?

That’s what Jesus would do I’m sure of it.

Unfortunately many of the passengers needing help probably are US taxpayers. By all means it’s time to address this (and a lot of other) tax avoiding behavior by corporations. More than one reckoning is coming as a result of Covid

They should seek their bailout $ there as well.

Give the Aid and bill the country where the ship is registered. Problem solved

Where do they think the help would come from? They don't want to pay in their fair share through taxes, they don't get to benefit from taxpayer money paid out. Oh, big U.S.-registered corporations, that goes for you too.

You know that Americans inside the ship are the the ones sick and not the ship itself dont you ? 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Bye!

Absolutely.

Who are these idiots that are still getting on these cruise ships? trump supporters who still think this is a hoax? I don’t get it!!

Sounds fair to me

Good. Fuck them

Agreed, no pun intended!

Man it’s a cold world. I can see us saying no bailout money, but healthcare for possible life threatening conditions, I would think we are better than that.

If anyone gets on a cruise ship they are putting their life at risk. They need to float around in the ocean for a while. Dummies.

Taxpayers Paid Millions to Design a Low-Cost Ventilator for a Pandemic. Instead, the Company Is Selling Versions of It Overseas.

If you were STUPID enough to board a cruise ship...

Seek medical aid elsewhere but Trump wants to give them money to protect their business with his bail outs. Fuck him.

I get this feeling cruise ships will be white elephants after all this is done.

I generally don’t believe in tough lessons that directly impact innocent people. It would be better to refuse any form of a bailout to the cruise industry. No taxes, then no money. Pretty simple

Good job Coast Guard

Makes sense

Good. I hope they figure it out. No pay taxes, no services.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Only problem I have with this is how many of the passengers are US citizens? Most?

That's correct.

Callous opinion, but I absolutely agree.

American citizens should be offered a solution to disembark. If their cruise ship sailed before this administration vocalized an accurate depiction of the pandemic (basically, before yesterday) there is no reason to offer them anything less.

The logic is beautiful in its irony

We'll bail them out with loans but we won't let the dock?

This needs to change. They should have to pay taxes to receive benefits

Cruise lines getting exactly what they deserve

Except those are Americans on the boats.

Yay

Oh, for crying out loud! We can give them financial bailouts, but not medical aid?

And ensure they don’t get a nickel from the corporate giveaway bailout.

Agreed! If you don’t pay taxes, you don’t get handouts.

Totally agree, and they should stop asking for money from our government. If you're registered overseas so you could avoid paying taxes. Sorry, but I am really out of fucks to give for greedy corporations.

I had an active duty job at Military Sealift Command. It amazed me at the amount of US shipping that avoided having US flagged ships. Something should have been done about this decades ago.

And NOT get bail out money!

felipuppy I absolutely agree that cruise companies that avoid US taxes through overseas registrations should be ineligible for US bailouts. However, the passengers are humans, many are US citizens, and they deserve compassion and medical care.

I feel bad for the passages but not the curse companies. This is why there should be no federal money for these companies

I agree in some ways but this is a pandemic and really they need to get those passengers treated. That's the humane thing to do.

Good. Fuuck the cruise industry

AGREED!

How'd that work out to save a few dollars?

Hmm. Interesting point. Valid. Very valid. I guess you get what you pay for...

100% fuck these crooks. Time for this industry to die.

Fair enough.

gigagrouch Good!

thegarance They're right too.

Totally agree with this... if they're US registered ships, fine. If not, yes, seek relief from the countries you are registered with. This crisis is showing the rot of corporations all over the world.

Davidlaz Maybe im a softie but for Christs sake these are humans in need. I hate the cruise ship industry as most do for avoiding US laws and taxes but these people are in a floating fucking petri dish. HELP THEM !

live by the sword die by the sword. 🇺🇸

But who wants to come to the U.S. right now for care? We're swamped. Maybe the Coast Guard is recommending that for humanitarian reasons.

Absolutely.

Don’t pay US taxes, don’t get US services. Simple.

Fuck em. I pay taxes and get smeckles from this stimulus plan. They should get nothing

YES!! killerCruiselines

Completely agree. If they are not US flagged vessels, they should be going to their registered country. These companies and their ships are not US companies.

That’s what the taxes be for geniuses that’s why I’ll never take a cruise they are inescapable germ filled traps.

It's time to change those laws.

Wait. Can we apply the same principle to those who keep their money in off shore accounts to avoid paying taxes?

InfectiousDz Right or wrong sending people to the Bahamas is to gaurenteed death for many of them. The Bahamas does not have a healthcare system, infrastructure or money to deal with this.

When the Coast Guard has had enough of your shenanigans.

Davidlaz Cuba will save them.

Fuck em lmao

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes

Yes! Finally someone calls them on it. And they can get their bailouts from their registration countries as well.

Financial aid surely ... but US citizens & citizens of other countries should be repatriated as soon as possible. It is immoral to keep them at sea...

Yes

I support this. Everyone wants the benefits of government but not the cost. I pay my taxes, time for corporations and the rich to pay too.

Yup

Sorry, not reasonable...

As one of the few compassionate Americans left, I say let them land and care for those aboard, tally up all the costs plus a 'service charge' and take the ships when they can't pay the bill.

They aren’t US companies? Why would they come here? Foreign Airlines aren’t asking the us for money?

Amen

You get what you pay for.

Businesses not registered in the US must not get any US aid, and this should be applicable to all corporations, not just cruise lines,

These parasites need to learn. Let them fail.

If they did it would be on their marketing webpage.

Hate to say it, but yep.
