The past nine months have been characterized by unprecedented loss, unprecedented sacrifice, and unprecedented change. In a mere matter of days this spring, our lives were turned upside down, and as a society we quickly had to make unprecedented changes to our everyday lives — many of which are likely to extend well into next year and beyond.
But we’ve seen unprecedented silver linings, too. What our COVID-19 experience has shown us is that contrary to popular belief, higher education can make change quickly. Colleges and universities changed their deadlines, moved to test-optional, and turned the admissions experience completely virtual. In a year of what seems like constant grief, it’s been heartening to see colleges and universities making changes that, we hope, will be better for students in the long run.
I’m proud of the initiative our team has taken here at Common App to make incremental changes and tear down barriers to applying to college. Our work is not finished, but as we head into the new year, it’s worth highlighting what we’ve accomplished this year and where 2021 will take us as an organization dedicated to helping more students access, afford, and attain postsecondary education. We know that the college admissions process can be difficult — and even painful — for many students.
In April, we began what we called the Evolving the App initiative, which is our exploration of particular questions on the application that may serve as barriers to completion for underrepresented students. This work would not be possible without input from our diverse college and university members, the counseling community, and the wealth of data we have at Common App. All of this work allows us to understand these barriers and work collaboratively to overcome them.
