As a first-generation college student, I knew how important it was to have a mentor. But the thing is… no one ever tells you exactlyI went through my first year at the University of Florida without a mentor . I found it hard to connect with my professors, especially in such large class settings. Thankfully, I was part of the, a scholarship program that supports about 1,200 first-gen, low-income students a year.
I got involved with my scholarship program and reached out when I needed help. It was then that I met Erica Aguiar as she had just started as the assistant director for the program. She always had time to chat when I showed up to the office unannounced and would give me the best advice on how to get involved on campus.

Erica helped me get involved on campus by serving as a reference when needed. But it wasn’t until the end of my sophomore year that I realized that she was my mentor. Up until that moment I assumed you needed to have a sort of “mentor-mentee” talk to establish an official mentorship.
