China’s agriculture tariffs also hit pork meat. Soy, however, was the largest item hit. What amounted to something closer to an outright ban on American soy rather than just higher tariffs for Chinese importers turned voters in farm counties away from Republicans in November. Concerns over a dried-up market in China spooked enough Midwestern voters, handing the Democrats their much touted “blue wave” in the House of Representatives.

The Lighthizer trip was expected, so another reason for the uptick in stocks today can be tied to the number of companies still beating earnings, says Dan Russo, market analyst for Chaikin Analytics. “Earnings estimates remain elevated and comments suggest that domestic demand remains strong despite a slowdown globally,” he says.More soy purchases are good news for U.S. agribusiness, though this should be considered short term. A lot is riding on Washington’s position related to Huawei.

“The olive branches have been extended so lets hope something can get done ,” says Brendan Ahern, chief investment officer for KraneShares, an ETF company investing in China.
