Furthermore, this law goes back nearly 100 years – when most of Pennsylvania’s laws regarding the sale of alcohol were passed, just as Prohibition was sweeping the nation. At the time, the Governor and General Assembly wanted to make it as inconvenient and expensive as possible to buy alcohol. A century later, it’s long past time to modernize these rules so they make more sense, and accurately reflect evolving consumer preferences in the 21st century.
Finally, consumers in Pennsylvania clearly value convenience. As too many people know from first-hand experience, Pennsylvania’s liquor laws are among the most complicated and inconvenient in the country – limited store locations, limited hours, limited availability. This means extra trips, longer wait times and small selection.
I urge my fellow lawmakers to join their constituents in recognizing the sensible, straightforward benefits to consumers across the state by passing this reasonable new rule that will give Pennsylvanians the convenience they want and deserve, and bring our outdated liquor laws into the 21st Century.
