California Gov. Gavin Newsom passed SB 206, also known as the Fair Pay to Play Act, into law Monday. The law allows college athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness.
The bill will go into effect in 2023, and if the bill survives the expected court challenges, it could reshape the NCAA's business model. The formal signing of the bill was done on Uninterrupted's show"The Shop," which is hosted by NBA superstar LeBron James."This is a game changer for student athletes and for equity in sports," said James.
— LeBron James September 30, 2019 The Fair Pay to Play Act allows college athletes in California to sign endorsement deals; earn compensation based on the usage of their name, image and likeness; and sign all types of licensing contracts that would allow them to earn money.Read MoreThese college athletes would also be able to hire an agent licensed by the state to represent them in any deals.
— Ed O'Bannon September 30, 2019 Thank you to California Governor @GavinNewsom for his leadership signing the bill protecting college athletes and bringing more equality to the multi billion dollar industry. Cc: @KingJames #MoreThanAnAthlete — Draymond Green September 30, 2019 For its part, the NCAA says it's looking at next steps."As a membership organization, the NCAA agrees changes are needed to continue to support student-athletes, but improvement needs to happen on a national level through the NCAA's rules-making process.

JayBilas So fake news, wants to show ignorants like Draymond calling a free education and a college life -a dictatorship
JayBilas Didn't realize all these poor college kids were forced to go to college!
JayBilas Tough Shit Draymond, If Student Athletes want to go down this road then let's make them pay their own way in school. I would be all for that.....kidkohls72
JayBilas While I agree that players should be able to make money coming from this dude is comical. Fella helped spear head the NBA owners not being called 'owners' due to its 'negative implications' Yet prides himself as being the 'Owner' of a multimedia company on his own instagram.
JayBilas That isn’t a dictatorship. The players are free to not enroll and play.
Thanks but where do I find the story about RepAdamSchiff trying to influence the 2020 election by making up words and intent of the President of the United State’s conversation with Ukraine’s President? I can’t find it
Great... that means they do not need scholarships and can pay taxes.
Endorsements fine, but to pay them? Can a physicist major get paid for a academic contribution?
College athletes getting paid for their likeness shouldn’t change anyhting the NCAA is doing. NCAA is a dictatorship.
No one forces athletes to play. If they’re going to be paid, they shouldn’t receive a scholarship which apparently these athletes forget they got for free. And for the 99% who do not play pro sports, that free education pays dividends down the line
California, great!!!
cynthianatalie Unconstitutional.
As a long time UCLA fan I'll miss seeing them in the NCAA tournament and an occasional bowl game. You can have pay to play in Ca just not in the NCAA.
Now they need to give Reggie Bush back all his accolades.
GavinNewsom might have legislated California teams out of the NCAA. This law isn’t as easy to enforce as it appears in the surface. Unless the NCAA adopts it nationally, this law might hurt usc and UCLA which I expect it will. ESPN will be a major player.
If libs in Cali sue because NCAA threatens to bar schools from championships, they are also opening up the way for other states to sue because the NCAA won’t hold postseason games in states with laws they don’t like, such as bathroom bills. California would then bitch about that
This is well-intended but will end up hurting college athletics in the long run. Mega-donor schools will dominate leaving mid level schools in the dust. Make it legal for any player of any age that wants to to go pro instead, that seems like the best compromise
Isn’t that wonderful? Meanwhile, on the streets of his cities, people lie in their own discarded needles waste while others need maps to sidestep the 💩.
Way to invite corruption.
🤔
Cool. So when CA is no longer eligible to participate in NCAA sanctioned events and the 'name, image, and likeness' become utterly worthless, this will be another Dem proposal gone the way of the shitter.
It is not gonna change a thing if the ncaa doesn’t approved of it. The team will get suspended and the kids will not be able to play for a championship
Well there goes football . This will ruin the game
