Some Tory think-tankers have suggested the British government should establish research institutes across the country

prime minister, Boris Johnson’s speeches have been studded with references to the glory of British science. Sometimes they are to cutting-edge facilities , sometimes to those who work in them and sometimes to the “colossal” investment his government will deliver.

And yet research excellence is not the government’s only aim. As he announced the extra money, Mr Johnson promised it would unleash a “new wave of economic growth” and “level up” industry in the regions. The goal, as a Toryputs it, is not to “to tip a load of money into telescopes to explore the outer regions of space, which will do fuck all for our economy”. Instead, it is to increase Britain’s dismal productivity growth, particularly in the regions, thus delivering jobs and higher wages.

There are better ways to spread the cash. As Mr Jones notes, the regions that currently have higher levels of private, and thus where there is probably scope to increase public spending, include the Midlands and the north-west. These parts of the country have the additional benefit of cheaper property and looser planning regimes than Oxford, Cambridge and London, thus lowering the cost of expansion.

Joint research projects with other countries into green technologies & labour saving capital solutionsAn efficient mechanism for turning wave & tidal kinetic/potential energy into electric energy would be especially good for the UK, could double as a sea border against pestilence

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha you are kidding right?

Problem with researvh is: you need well-educated, intelligent people to carry it out properly and successfully. They just walked out the door and went home; back to whatever EU Country they came from. This was designed for Brexit . Thank

Those in government make a lot of promises & almost all of them have gone undelivered. Learn from history, folks.

If the Labour Party continues with its far left leadership it won't matter what the Conservatives do, nor who leads them, they'll stay in Government. No one can deny that the current Government is the poorest in living memory, yet they wiped the floor with Corbyn's Labour Party.

If it is science, biotech and technology, it could attract skilled people from all over the world. The problem is Brexit has created an impression of instability and intolerance. I am from the US so I know instability and intolerance and I think people would prefer the EU.

alllibertynews Nah, the English schools of science have been autistic/schizoaffective since Hitler died. but more likely before

Not enough short-term profit in research.
