Why do some people enjoy listening to music more than others do? Perhaps because of the way music activates the brain's reward system, writes LydiaDenworth

Beethoven or the Beatles? Jazz or Jay-Z?

About five years ago, Loui and her colleagues wanted to quantify emotional reactions to music. They turned to physiological measures like skin conductance, which reflects the variation in electrical activity in the skin when a person is aroused. “Whenever people get strong emotional responses to music, when they're listening to music that they enjoy, they show peaks of skin conductance and then also faster heart rate,” Loui says.

After that paper got published, a man Loui calls BW got in touch with her. “He said he had never understood why people enjoy music,” Loui says. BW has a condition called musical anhedonia. First described in 2013, the condition means people are insensitive to the rewards of listening to music.

LydiaDenworth And also helps us remember the movie... by listening to the music of Star Wars...I recall the story...and emotions... Music is an implanted Charge... but it can be annoying to play on its own in one's head, the same snippet for days... I have this...so I limit myself...

LydiaDenworth It is a way to express and convey emotions through music... watch a movie...

LydiaDenworth are getting more than just a 'brain reward'...

LydiaDenworth Emotions help set up and store, prioritize, memories...this is done with emotional charge and has a physiological component, the GluR1 neuroreceptor. The emotional charge of music can enhance that process. So, maybe...just maybe... people who listen to music more than others...

LydiaDenworth There are two other whole-brain activities... Emotions... and Memory... and each can influence the other two. An emotion or a memory can inspire music... for example. Music can elicit emotions, and bring back a memory. Memory can be of music and/or emotions...

LydiaDenworth Affecting our emotions, it thus creates thoughts, attitudes, beliefs about, considerations, conclusions, decisions, premises, assumptions, inner action that are then projected outward as behaviors. Music enhances behavior. Music is looked at now as a whole-brain activator...

LydiaDenworth Through contact, exposure, involvement, and influence, the energy load or charge is implanted, imprinted, and embedded in us. That action on us can produce a positive or negative shock and manifests emotions of like or dislike. The degree of Affinity within us...

LydiaDenworth Frekvence, or Frequency... is a part of Charge. The wave motion of an energy. The energy has an amount, intensity, frequency, polarity, speed, momentum, inertia, and mass. This is the 'load'. That is what Charge is, an expression of that energy load.

LydiaDenworth It is a pleasure people connect with... unfortunately the downside is, as with anything... Addiction. Music is energy. Acoustical Energy. It is an energy in motion... E-motion. Music excites emotions. Energy has a load, which is termed a 'charge'. Music is an emotional charge.

blatusi LydiaDenworth Frekvence.

LydiaDenworth Good stimulus ! :√)

Serotonine activation!!! Yess!

Music is a sensory experience. Many musicians aren't as sociable as the rest of the population. I have a feeling that it's just a correlation.

I once met someone who said he never listened to music as he derived no pleasure from it. Felt sorry for him.

Fantastic research and article- worth a read.

LydiaDenworth Given the similarity between social & music rewards, I'd love to see a study of typical v. PD's (like Borderline) where social rewards are paramount. A lot of us with BPD strongly identify with music and this might explain why.

LydiaDenworth FASCINATING. I’ll purposefully listen to music maybe 3-4 times a year, but the rest of the time find it annoying. I also haven’t done anything with friends in at least 4 years. Which parts of the brain do sports activate? I get ZERO enjoyment from them. I love food tho! 😆

LydiaDenworth Yes music only for me and best friends in gps and I am selfish

LydiaDenworth WilliamRichJr

LydiaDenworth I have to admit, I never really particularly enjoyed music either ... is not something I would go out of my way to do... 🤔

LydiaDenworth Some people do this, some people do that & that's the way of the world, now if you like to analyze things why don't you analyze the two hours you take every morning to put those layers of fake, you're a fake, everything about you is fake, ANALYZE THAT!

LydiaDenworth Schizoid behaviour?

LydiaDenworth 'Stimming'!

LydiaDenworth we really do have physiological reactions in response to music. soothing lyrical contents are medicine.

LydiaDenworth positive lyrical content songs medicine
