The Department of Homeland Security watchdog has criticized Border Patrol for not looking for a cheaper alternative to the border wall, such as cutting-edge surveillance technology.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is testing autonomous surveillance towers like this one, parked at the Border Security Expo in San Antonio, to improve the tracking of illegal crossers. Critics of the border wall say the government should favor virtual technology over steel and concrete.U.S. Customs and Border Protection is testing autonomous surveillance towers like this one, parked at the Border Security Expo in San Antonio, to improve the tracking of illegal crossers.

"We now are in a time where we can build this virtual border wall technology. We have that already. I mean, you got the autonomous surveillance towers," said Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat from a border district where CBP proposes to build 121 miles of barriers."But there's political pressure from the White House. They're saying, 'Build me the wall. Get me miles.

CBP counters that the agency needs both the wall and the mobile towers because eyes in the sky can detect illegal crossers but they can't stop them.

mrgreg Yeah, but then we wouldn't be getting all this money from Mexico to pay for it like they did with The Wall that was built on 'day one of my administration.' dws

The Border Patrol was not the one totally committed to building a physical wall.

it isn't a one or the other. these things are not mutually exclusive. morons.

more surveillance isnt the answer. no wall is the answer.

The border wall was never about the border wall. It was all about the grift. I.e., giving plum, bloated no-bid contracts to tRump supporters to build a 'wall' in a far flung location with little or no oversight.

The exponentially diminished number of border crossings suggests the wall is worth its price tag, which Mexico has already paid numerous times over with our great new US Mexico Canada Agreement.

That's because there were contractors who contributed to Fat Fingers' campaign who needed to be paid back.

that's not an acceptable alternative. npr is defending drug, weapons and human trafficking

Follow. The. Money.

Wait. This was completely obvious from day one.

Just electrify the fence already

Pfft...whatever.

Nice business acumen, mr. p.

I wonder if their failure to choose new high tech surveillance over building a wall had anything to do with the president telling them to build a wall and not favor new high tech surveillance

oh, it's so not the point.

Surveillance technology doesn't look as good on camera. And Comrade Trump is all about the cameras.

Lol you want a person that’s gonna have a guy driving around in a truck around the border with a camera that’s on a Huge pole on the bed of his trucks that can be seen moving around cause of the height?

Why would they? Because you know Trump is all about that wall, 'Bout that wall, no tech He’s all 'bout that wall, 'bout that wall, no tech He’s all 'bout that wall, 'bout that wall, no tech ...

Clearly your watchdog wants to find a way to sneak as many illegals over as he can and call it legal. Once they cross they are in. The wall is the only solution

But you can’t emblazon your name on a high tech solution

Huh. Modern technology like they’re using in other super powers like China and Russia? And successfully, probably? Wake up America!

The people who failed at protecting the southern border for decades are saying that this administration is doing it wrong.

I heard 'border wall' but then I turned the corner and it was something that looked like science and math ....

BWAAAA HAAA HAAA HAAA HAAA

China says what?

Criticized by people with emotional maturity of a 3rd grader is not criticism.

Theyll be fired or transferred soon.

Hopefully not THIS kind of high tech solution.

OUR COUNTRY IS RUN BY MORONS WHO ARE LITERALLY KILLING US. brokenAmerica

But of course they messed up and didn’t try to use technology to help them. What a bunch of clowns in this agency and within the administration.

What’s the name of the watchdog. Probably a Dem

No... once they step over we have to take care of them and process them and y’all scream that they are in “cages” at detention centers. I don’t want them being filmed walking over to US soil. Just keep them from crossing ffs...

At the end of the day. The wall stands. Any advanced device reliant on electronics and mechanical devices fails eventually. Can only be an accessory not the base deterrent. TrumpLandslideVictory2020

A more sensible and cost effective solution.

Canada to U.S. Visitors: Please Don't Sneak Across the BorderI was packing for my road trip from Colorado to Alberta, Canada, when the text came in from a gentleman I'd been helping with groceries during the pandemic.'The Canadians are actually doing damage to vehicles with United States plates on them,' he cautioned, giving me my first inkling that it wasn't just public health officials who were serious about keeping Americans out of Canada, where the death rate from the coronavirus has been roughly half that of its southern neighbor. As a dual citizen I was entitled to cross the border, closed to most Americans because of the pandemic. With an octogenarian father in Calgary who had been largely isolated during the stay-at-home orders, I was willing to submit to Canada's mandatory two-week quarantine in order to visit. But my friend's warning proved prescient. Some concerned residents who fear that the virus will be spread to their communities have been taking matters into their own hands, spurring so many reports of intimidation that the premier of British Columbia, John Horgan, reminded angry Canadians to 'Be Calm. Be Kind' at a July 27 news conference.Addressing those Americans who are in Canada legally, he said: 'With respect to those who have offshore plates and are feeling harassed, I would suggest perhaps public transit. I would suggest that they get their plates changed. I would suggest that they ride a bike.'Before the pandemic, when Americans could choose most any country in the world to travel, Canada was their second most popular foreign destination, behind only Mexico. Lured by the proximity, advantageous exchange rate and safety of their northern neighbor, in the first six months of last year, U.S. residents made 10.5 million trips to Canada, the highest level in 12 years, according to Statistics Canada, a government agency. But the welcome mat was rolled up on March 31, when the border between the two countries was closed to tourists. That hasn't kept some Americans from trying, however. Many are routinely turned TrumpShitholeNation HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, we tried that at our southern border vica verca bitches!
