Booz Allen Hamilton is the latest company to offer employees emergency funds and a pledge of no layoffs in the face of the economic upheaval stirred by the coronavirus outbreak

Company leaders cobbled the $100 million for the resilience program from the travel, marketing, and events budgets and will keep open job positions unfilled. A hiring freeze is in effect until at least July.

Booz Allen has fared better than the government services industry overall. Company stocks are down 2.1% year to date compared to the 11% decline in the wider sector. The majority of the company’s business comes from government contracts. Rozanski says the importance of their works means faltering is not an option.

“We support critical national security missions and health and health infrastructure missions that simply cannot stop given what’s going,” Rozanski says. The Booz Allen Foundation has also separately given to the COVID-19 Military Support Initiative, CDC Foundation and to the Feeding America organization.

“Some companies are hit so hard by this that they have no choice but to do layoffs and furloughs but I hope everybody is looking at that as a last resort,” Rozanski says. A number of other companies have given their employees similar assurances in recent weeks. Company leaders at Visa, Morgan Stanley and Paypal, among others, have promised to avoid layoffs.
