Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, the dominating St. Louis Cardinals pitcher who won a record seven consecutive World Series starts and set a modern standard for excellence when he finished the 1968 season with a 1.12 ERA, died Friday. He was 84. The Cardinals confirmed Gibson’s death shortly after losing to San Diego 4-0 in the NL playoffs. Gibson had long been ill with pancreatic cancer in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.
Gibson’s death came on the 52nd anniversary of perhaps his most overpowering performance, when he struck out a World Series record 17 batters in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series against Detroit. One of baseball’s most uncompromising competitors, the two-time Cy Young Award winner spent his entire 17-year career with St. Louis and was named the World Series MVP in their 1964 and ’67 championship seasons.
Gibson died less than a month after the death of a longtime teammate, Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock. Another pitching great from his era, Tom Seaver, died in late August.
One of the greatest! I loved watching Bob Gibson pitch. Incredibly talented man. RIP MLB
RIP
RIP Bob Gibson. Certainly on the ballot for G.O.A.T.
God bless Bob Gibson. As tough an SOB as there ever was and a childhood hero of mine. Still have his baseball cards from the 60s. 1.12 ERA. RIP and thanks.
Best athlete in Nebraska history.
He and Lou Brock we my all time fav Cardinals! RIP Mr. Gibson!
One of the most tenacious and greatest to ever play
One of the Top 3 MLB pitchers of all time. RIP Bob Gibson..you will be missed.
He was a marvel to watch, don’t make them like that anymore. Renowned for his fierce competitive nature and intimidating presence on the mound, Gibson pitched more complete games (255) in his 17-year career with the Cardinals than he had wins (251). He also hit 24 career homeSri
May he rest well 💜
Dadgum it. Another great one from my youth. This man really is one who changed the game. Rest In Peace, sir.
The man was so badass supposedly he threw a brushback pitch in an Old-Timers game.
Fearsome competitor. Rest easy to a GOAT

Noooo. What a competitor. How many complex games? Two grand slams.
Farewell Gibby! Undoubtedly one of my favorite pitchers of all-time. MLB literally changed the rules to stop Bob Gibson. Most pitchers can’t say that. I’m devastated.
