. Because the bean looked similar to an eye, in West Africa cuisine it was often eaten as a good luck charm to help ward off evil spirits. It was also viewed as a way to gain fortunes because when cooked, the black-eyed pea increases in size, thus inspiring many to have faith that the same would happen to their wallets.
