Billionaires spent 41 times more on the 2016 election compared to 2008

American billionaires’ financial influence in politics has increased dramatically in the past few campaign cycles, according to a new report, with the tiny group of America’s wealthiest now accounting for nearly 10% of all federal campaign spending—a number that was below 1% before the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v.

Billionaires only accounted for 0.3% of federal election spending in 2008, according to the report, but that number ballooned to over 9.5% during the 2018 midterms.
