Leonard expressed his feelings had no negative bearings, but wanted to highlight a persisting problem in Hollywood.A recent UCLA report showed that though there are vast improvements in diversity in front of the camera, the same story does not exist on the other side of the lens. UCLA Dean of Social Sciences Darnell Hunt said, “There has not been the same level of progress behind the camera.
Based only on the exclusion of other folks, statistically speaking, roughly 1/3 of the industry has their job not because of merit, but because of other factors .” both know plenty of unqualified people who manage to stay employed for reasons other than their talent, though both of us have enough decorum not to name names.”
Hollywood folks tend to believe that it’s a pure meritocracy and their success is an indication of their merit alone.” Wow. Really? I totally owe a huge debt to my folks and in no way have said I didn’t. Why make broad generalizations? You argument about diversity is very sound and I agreed with it.After a few exchanges, Leonard wanted to lay the argument at rest and have them agree to the central tenet of the discussion: Hollywood’s lack of diversity behind the camera is related to how familial relationships in the industry dictate job opportunity.
This may be true as far as having a long and successful career in Hollywood. But the fact is the biggest battle is getting your foot in the door. Having connections in the industry helps big time. There are so many talented people that can't break in.
Then explain Scott Eastwood’s “acting”
RIP JERRY STILLER
'Untalented' maybe he met his wife..🤷♀️
Hollywood IS a meritocracy and although nepotism may get their 'foot in the door' we ALL have equal access to—huhn? 'Step back' is this good? Okay. We ALL have equ—more? Oh. OFF the porch! Cool! We ALL ha—huhn? Like onto the sidewalk!? No problem. What!? ACROSS THE STREET!? damn
a star is a star no matter what. nepotism can obviously give you a chance but how you dance on that chance that’s up to you. nepotism won’t go long way , talent and luck would 🙏🏻 🍀
'Bio-casting' in Hollywood Apartheid. Ben Stiller notes the lack of diversity in Hollywood. Will Ben commit to hiring 12% African-Americans before/behind the camera in his next film? Hispanics and Asians, too? Or, will he just be 'outspoken' as they say in Hollywood?
- Ever heard of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara?
That must be why it’s so easy to get into the business without parents…whk are in the business.
Yeah sure.
His dad might be Jerry Stiller and I'm sure that helped Ben get started, but Ben is legitimately one of the best comedy directors of all time, he far surpassed his dad's accomplishments. Nepotism is one thing. Following your father's example is not that thing. Give it a rest.
RedHourBen Says the white son of 2 members of entertainment royalty. OH OK BEN SURE SURE.
🤦🏻♀️
This is a very interesting article about a very interesting dialogue. Thanks for including the Tweets for a fuller representation of the context. Many people out there are commenting on Ben Stiller’s parents and his access to Hollywood, but there’s more to this than that.
Point Ben Stiller RedHourBen made is that nepotism gives you a shot, but only talent makes you a star. Family connections can open doors & get you into projects, but it won’t keep you working. If audiences don’t like you you’re done. Ben has real talent!
Undoubtedly there are cases of merit based success in Hollywood like Seth MacFarlane, Seth Rogen, Gosling, and McAdams for example. There should be no argument that those certainly are outliers and many of today’s biggest stars are related to other famous people and families
Besides nepotism and the “who you know” aspect; everything is a remake or a sequel.
Talent is irrelevant to access. Access and no talent = career in Hollywood Talent and no access = No career in Hollywood Only a Hollywood scion would argue differently.
Somehow Bryce Dalllas Ron Howard dodged this bullet
Scott Eastwood comes to mind
The poster child of nepotism and achieving undeserved stardom with minimal talent says it doesn’t exist. Go figure.
Is that Ben stiller also ,dun dun daaaah
Nepotism rules in Hollywood! There’s a shitnton of “son/daughter of” that don’t have the talent and only got the chance because of connections their family has. I’m not saying some of them don’t have talent, but they have opportunities that others don’t.
Damn that’s crazy
