New research shows that compounds in smog and diesel exhaust can interfere with pollination by bees and butterflies—and thus the cultivation of crops

New research shows that compounds in smog and diesel exhaust stymie insect pollinators by hampering their ability to sniff out flowers.

Bees and butterfliesplay a vital role in agriculture, with farmers around the world depending on these and other insects to help pollinate crops ranging from coffee and cocoa to berries. But new research from the U.K. shows that common air pollutants can interfere with pollination and thus the cultivation of crops by making it hard for some insects to sniff out the aromatic flowers where they sip nectar and nosh on pollen.

“Diesel exhaust and ozone pollution can react with the chemicals that make up the floral odors that insects use to find flowers,” said James Ryalls, a University of Reading research fellow and the lead author of a paper describing the research published Wednesday

There's also plenty of research on how smog and diesel pollution impacts the learning abilities of young children; damages lungs and hearts. Coal dust also has similar impacts.

After feeding, Girling says insects such as honeybees learn which compounds lead to the tastiest flowers and return to them like Pavlov’s dog. “Diesel exhaust and ozone pollution can react with the chemicals that make up the floral odors that insects use to find flowers,” said James Ryalls, a University of Reading research fellow and the lead author of a paper describing the research published Wednesday . Among the authors was Wendy Leighton, a Santa Fe middle school history teacher.

“It can just make them not smell anything at all. “[The pollutants] can degrade the signal that they use, so they might not be able to find the flower anymore,” Ryalls says. “It’s part of our process to open people’s eyes to the depth and diversity of things that they might not necessarily see.” To Read the Full Story .
