Bastrop City Council strips some duties from mayor after ethics reprimand

Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall could lead to flooding.The Bastrop City Council voted 4-1 to remove some responsibilities from Mayor Lyle Nelson following a unanimous ethics violation ruling related to his interference with an investigation into misused funds at Visit Bastrop , a city-funded marketing organization.

The investigation into Visit Bastrop, which receives about $1.5 million annually in city hotel occupancy tax funds, uncovered approximately $70,000 in unidentified or mislabeled funds, with the probe still ongoing and the potential for more to be found. The approved resolutions limit council members' speaking times, alter the agenda-setting process to reduce the mayor's role, and dictate that proclamations be read by the city secretary rather than the mayor.

Mayor Nelson maintained his innocence, stating, "There can't be any evidence because there was no misuse of funds on my part." He said he would turn over his devices to investigators and respect the ethics board's decision.
