At least two people died in the SF Bay Area during a potent California storm.

Warning messages for drivers are posted along U.S. Highway 101 in Marin County before a powerful storm arrives to the area in Novato, Calif. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023.At least two people were killed in the Bay Area on Wednesday night amid a California storm that kicked up dangerous winds and dumped heavy rain.

A 1-year-old child was killed by a redwood tree that fell onto a mobile home in the Sonoma County town of Occidental about 60 miles northwest of San Francisco, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said. A teen died in Fairfield when her car hydroplaned across standing water on a roadway. The parents were at home in Occidental when the massive tree toppled but were not injured, Sgt. Juan Valencia with the sheriff's office told SFGATE on the phone.

The Occidental Volunteer Fire Department initially responded to the incident in the 2800 block of Joy Road just after dark at 5:14 p.m."The 1-year-old was pinned under the tree," Valencia said. First responders attempted to revive the child but failed. Valencia said preliminary reports indicated that the tree was about 6 feet in diameter, but that detail has not been confirmed.
