Coach Brian Dutcher uncovered Miles Heide and BJ Davis at Section 7 event in Arizona last June

Section 7 is a relatively new basketball recruiting event, held each June at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., with 200-plus high school teams from 12 western states playing on 12 courts spread across the floor of the Arizona Cardinals’ home while 500 college coaches watch.

Dutcher was so smitten with Heide that he did something head coaches rarely do: He handled most of the recruiting grunt work himself, flying to Seattle several times and then driving east to Snoqualmie. He regularly called Heide and his parents, both of whom played college basketball. He called his coaches. He attended every event his travel club entered over the summer: Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle.

That was June. Each time Dutcher saw him after that, he had added another element to his game and figures to arrive on campus next year more polished offensively than SDSU’s recent freshmen bigs who were more defensively inclined. Those are the same words Dutcher used to describe Davis, who has a similar career arc. He also played JV as a freshman, also played in the shadow of Div. I prospects, also had a breakout weekend at Section 7.

“He’s going to get bigger, stronger, and he’s going to be a dynamic guard for us. It was exciting to get a guard with that kind of upside.”
