I have written or edited about the auto industry on and off (mostly on) since 1985, first at The Indianapolis Star then, for more than a dozen years, at Bloomberg News in Detroit, followed by almost nine years at SME Media.

About 8,700 workers at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville walked off the job, the Detroit-based UAW said inThe plant makes Super Duty pickups and other vehicles, among the most profitable products that Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford makes. Ford estimates the factory generates $25 billion annually in revenue. The action expands the UAW’s strike against Ford. The UAW is striking some plants at Ford, General Motors Co. and Stellantis, which includes the former Chrysler Corp.

Until now, the union has usually expanded its strike against the automakers in weekly increments, with new strike targets announced on Fridays. The walkout against the three Detroit automakers began in mid-September. The UAW has publicly criticized the automakers during the talks. In turn, the automakers have responded with public statements of their own. Traditionally, the union and automakers didn’t make public pronouncements about specific proposals during contract negotiations.

Ford last month reached a new three-year contract with Unifor, the union that represents workers at the company’s factories in Canada. As a result, Ford avoided having to deal with strikes on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border.
