Despite having just six games to gauge Jake Meyers' readiness for a potential playoff role, Astros manager Dusty Baker did not start the embattled center fielder on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Astros recalled Meyers during Thursday’s off day after a resurgent 24-game stint at Class AAA Sugar Land. Meyers slashed .337/.451/.544 in 92 at-bats with the Space Cowboys. Baker said Meyers will start Saturday’s game against American League Cy Young candidate Shane McClanahan. “I wanted to see what he looked like today, see him work out and stuff,” Baker said. “One game or whatever doesn’t really put you back into judging a person, but you can sort of tell how he’s swinging and this and that. We’ve had some other guys that have performed pretty well, too.”
The Astros demoted Meyers to Sugar Land last month after an awful 47-game showing in the wake of offseason shoulder surgery. His most direct path to a playoff roster spot is as a late-game defensive replacement or pinch-runner, but it could behoove the Astros to see whether Meyers could carry over the offensive progress he demonstrated at Class AAA.More Astros News
