Justin Verlander #35 of the Houston Astros throws out Isiah Kiner-Falefa #12 of the New York Yankees on a ground ball in the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium on June 24, 2022 in New York City. NEW YORK — The stopper seemed serene, comforting after a near catastrophe. Justin Verlander waved his glove toward the third-base dugout as an athletic trainer seemed ready to run for a visit. Isiah Kiner-Falefa launched a 93.6 mph line drive toward Verlander’s arm.
“This is what you hope for,” manager Dusty Baker said. “This is what the horses do. I’ve said it every time he’s pitched — they stop losing streaks and create winning streaks. Hopefully this is the creation of a winning streak for us.” Rafael Montero made himself available to throw a third consecutive day, but he totaled just 30 pitches in his previous two outings. Baker could extract one inning from him— at best. The army of Phil Maton, Seth Martinez, Bryan Abreu and Brandon Bielak remained.
For Friday to be successful, Verlander had to pitch with efficiency. The Yankees did not allow it. They took some taxing plate appearances across the first three innings, inviting wonder how long Verlander could pitch. He needed 52 pitches to procure the first nine outs.
