Growing concerns about greenhouse gas emissions at the consumer and state levels are stifling demand for coal as well. The California customers buying the bulk of IPP’s power are dropping their coal contracts, pushing that plant toWater will serve as the primary source of IPP’s hydrogen, splitting molecules into oxygen and hydrogen gases through electrolysis. But the Intermountain Power Agency notes it will consume “substantially” less water than the plant’s current coal-fueled generation.
“The fossil fuel resources, one of their important roles in electricity production is the fact they’re dispatchable,” said David Eskelsen, a spokesperson for PacifiCorp. “They can respond as customer demand changes throughout the day.” “Retirement of a major generating resource is something that has to be done quite deliberately and carefully,” he said. “You have to make sure you have resources to replace the ones that are retiring.”
The company tentatively plans to power down Huntington in 2036 and Hunter in 2042. The fate of those plants’ water remains unknown.

Laughable. Wind and solar only produce a fraction of the electricity coal produces. And on calm, cloudy days, solar and wind electricity production is 20%.
also data centers and golf courses! not to mention apartments
Wind and solar power leads to massive brownouts in California. The supply is inconsistent. Let’s keep that in mind before we ditch natural gas.
With not enough water in this country to survive on why is Biden allowing millions of illegal immigrants to invade the country?
Solar power only works during daylight hours. Why not convert to the NEW Atomic Power Plants which are so much safer today then in the past. Some fully operational atomic power plants are easily transported on semi trucks and then buried in the ground. Cheap and reliable energy.
We need to identify those keeping us from progressing, and do all we can to keep them behind, as they wish. They are dead weight to us.
They also only produce a fraction of the power...
Nuclear power is the only way out of this.
The cleanest energy is nuclear but everybody is against that. The next cleanest is natural gas but it is a fossil fuel which Liberals want banned. So what is your solution for this problem? Solar only works during daylight and Windmills will only work 32 mph or less.
Patbagley Okay let's talk about this one wind power is only functional if the wind is blowing. Solar only works if the sun is shining, the panels are clean, and it is not snowing, since Utah gets five months of crap weather a year what are they supposed to use for power then?
The answer is nuclear. Greens can go pound sand.

Gravity-based batteries try to beat their chemical cousins with winches, weights, and mine shaftsA handful of gravity-based energy storage companies are working to offer an alternative to the chemical batteries that dominate the global energy storage market. ScienceMagArchives Is there are any recent review (or at least study) about this? I think I already marked this for potential addition to albeit it's a first power generation event and not a research paper trintran Yeah, 'improving an old technology' Compared with pumped hydro the amount of energy stored seems tiny. Maybe you could do load levelling or something but I can't see it for hour or day scale storage.
