As Ketanji Brown Jackson makes history, Cruz and Cornyn call her a threat to freedom

WASHINGTON — Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on Thursday became the first Black woman to be confirmed to the Supreme Court as the Senate easily advanced her nomination, despite GOP resistance bolstered by Texas’s Republican senators.

Texas Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, who were instrumental in the GOP’s efforts to oppose Jackson’s nomination. Both voted against her confirmation as expected. He also led the GOP in quizzing Jackson on her views on critical race theory, reading aloud from the picture book “Antiracist Baby” in a moment that went viral online. In another exchange, Cruz pressed Jackson to define “woman,” and asked if he could “decide I’m an Asian man” in order to sue for discrimination.

The Republicans who voted for Jackson, however, said they believe she will serve as an independent jurist. One of them, Murkowski, also took a swing at how members of her party had handled the confirmation process, saying her support for Jackson “also rests on my rejection of the corrosive politicization of the review process for Supreme Court nominees, which, on both sides of the aisle, is growing worse and more detached from reality by the year.
