and similar games and apps may have their own independent payment systems on PC, in order to be listed on Apple’s App Store, the mobile release must use Apple's structure, which mandates a 30% cut in revenue for the nearly $2 trillion company.a complaint in a U.S.
Apple isn’t the only company Epic has butted heads with regarding its store policies: the studio initially releasedas a third-party app on Android phones but eventually agreed to host the game on Google's Play Store, saying it did so because Google warns users of security issues and malware otherwise.
Apple's policy has been in the crosshairs of other tech giants like Microsoft, which vehemently criticized Apple last week over its refusal to allow its cloud game service on devices, saying,"Apple stands along as the only general purpose platform to deny consumers from cloud gaming and game subscription services like Xbox Game Pass."
While Apple CEO Tim Cook claims the policy is applied evenly to all developers, emails released by the U.S. House antitrust subcommittee in showed the company gave preferential treatment to Amazon to get its Prime Video app onto mobile devices.
If Epic agree'd to a no-direct payment clause for listing their app in Apple's and/or Google's app store and violated that clause, they are in breech. I hope Apple eats Epic's lunch over this to be honest.
A parallel to be drawn here - if a travel app sells tickets, why don't the app stores lay a claim to revenue share there? Why is that off limit while fortnite is somehow in-app?
I hope Epic wins and it leads to me being able to use xcloud on my iPhone.
It is a rather large differnce 20% but if thats how apple wants to play it google will be the winner.
I can already hear the 8 year old wails.
