There are lots of new extras in the latest iOS update. One stands out for usefulness and convenience. Even if it’s a topic you may not like talking about.

Make sure you’re on iOS 15.2 or iPadOS 15.2

Assuming you are, go to Settings and tap on your name at the top of that page. This takes you to Apple ID and on the first page is Password & Security. Scroll down on this page to find Legacy Contact and choose Add Legacy Contact—it explains here that it means that the “legacy contact can access and download data from your account after your death.”

This is also explained on the next screen when you press the Plus icon to add a contact. Once you’ve chosen them, and you may be offered suggestions to start you off, you then have to choose how to share the access key with them. You can choose to do this by Message or printing it out. Before you do either, I’d really suggest discussing this with your intended contact, perhaps to make clear that you’re thinking ahead rather than this being a slightly passive-aggressive way of saying something’s up and they shouldn’t buy you another birthday card.Speaking of birthdays, Apple uses this to confirm access at the appropriate moment, so Apple advises you check your details are correct.

The contact chooses to accept and will then have a n access key in their Apple ID. Suppose they don’t have an iPhone? You can print the access key, and it may be worth saving a copy with your will. To access the data they will need an Apple ID, but they can create this without owning an Apple device.

Russian court extends jail term for Gulag historian to 15 yearsA Russian court on Monday added two more years to a 13-year jail sentence for historian Yuri Dmitriev, in a sex abuse case that his supporters say was trumped up to punish him for uncovering mass graves of Stalin's Gulags. Absolute mockery of justice. Free this professor! That's called a deep dive in journalism. A little to deep. A little too Russian.
