Ahead of the upcoming CES , the 8K Association has revealed updates to its product Certification program, along with a number of new members. Including, intriguingly, no less a content-creating giant than Amazon Prime Video.
The 8K Association Certification program is designed to give consumers a way of knowing at a glance that an 8K TV is good enough across a range of performance areas to deliver on its 8K promise. Currently this program sets requirements for resolution, luminance, video decoding standards and colour and connectivity for a TV to be able to wear an 8K Association Certified badge of honor.
The term Ambient Contrast Ratio refers to a screen’s ability to keep delivering good picture quality in a variety of different ambient lighting conditions. So, for instance, while TVs produce their brightest colours and most extreme contrast in a dark room, in brighter conditions factors such as the way their screens deal with reflections and their brightness can have a massive impact on how picture quality holds up.
The 8KA has developed a way of measuring a TV’s reflectivity in both bright and dark conditions, and set minimum levels of reflection management for each scenario. “We have been discussing ACR for more than a year as a new item,” says KG Lee, Chair of the 8KA’s Technology Work Group, “and it was finally included in V2.1.0.
