For two weeks, AP photographer EMiliomorenatti accompanied Barcelona’s medical personnel as they tended to the home-bound elderly, who have suffered the heaviest toll in the pandemic. He saw scores of difficult decisions being made to keep them safe.

BARCELONA — The elderly of Barcelona’s working-class Poble Sec neighborhood, the generation who survived widespread hunger after the Spanish Civil War, started out vulnerable.

“All the misery is coming to light,” said visiting nurse Laura Valdes after a day of house calls up and down the narrow stairwells of Poble Sec’s apartment blocks. As a result, Barcelona’s elderly are suffering at home, alone and more isolated than ever. Few know for sure if they have the virus, but the threat that they might catch it — even from the visiting medical teams they need — has only heightened their anxiety.

“We’re like onions,” Rodriguez said of the layers she wears. “Nothing is sufficient to protect you from the virus.”

Yemen has 1st confirmed virus case, more than 10k in IsraelYemen’s internationally recognized government announces the first confirmed case of coronavirus in the war-torn country, stoking fears that an outbreak could devastate an already crippled health care system. I really hope they are able to contain the spread ASAP and not let it get out of hand But the politicians, media, etc. saw it as a problem over there. Instead they focused on elections, economy, rail blockages etc. Now everyone points fingers at everyone else for not acting soon enough. Sad. Are the Saudis responsible? Believe so. They now want to back off in their attacks on Yemen. Speaking of the Saudis they don't seem to be reporting any coronavirus contamination. (Maybe the 'oil baths' combat the virus.)
