“American Song Contest” made its long-awaited debut on Monday, with a two-hour episode featuring 11 acts from different states and U.S. territories.
The artists represented Connecticut, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and Wyoming on night one. It was the first batch of competitors — out of an overall field of 56 acts, representing each of the 50 states plus five territories and Washington D.C. The show, which is being hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg, is based on the popular Eurovision Song Contest.
The acts all perform original songs and, like with Eurovision, it is the the song and the state it represents — not the musical act — that is being voted on. The series is set to run 8 p.m. Mondays through May 9. There are three rounds of competition — qualifying, semi-finals and finals — and viewers can vote for their favorites.The show definitely needs some fine tuning. For one thing, the artist intros — covering their backgrounds and connection to the states/territories — went on way too long. The performances ran the gamut, from forgettable to fabulous. Most, however, were squarely in the middle.
