Largest public library system in US says it's ending late fees for overdue booksThe largest public library system in the country is no longer charging late fees — and is clearing the books for those with outstanding debts. I don't agree that late fees are ineffective. Removing the fee as in my local library, just encourages people to be irresponsible in returning resources in a timely manner. Some return empty CD and DVD cases & the library doesn't follow up. A lot of people against this move are people who haven't visited a library in years. There are ways to encourage the prompt return of materials that don't come with a financial penalty (e.g. they can suspend borrowing privileges when an item is x days overdue). I would have kept every book and album I ever borrowed if there was no late fee.

Largest public library system in U.S. ends late fees in push for equityFines are 'an antiquated, ineffective way to encourage patrons to return their books,' the president of the New York Public Library said. Chicago already did that about 2-3 years ago. Since when does equity mean a lack of accountability and no responsibility for personal choices? This has nothing to do equity. Chose to check out a book, chose to bring it back, or pay the fine. If you can’t pay the fine either return the book or don’t check one out at all.

CancelStudentDebt I wish federal contractors who do the same job as their Civil Servants coworkers could qualify.
