The largest public library system in the country is no longer charging late fees — and is clearing the books for those with outstanding debts.
Library president Anthony W. Marx called fines an"antiquated ineffective way to encourage patrons to return their books; for those who can afford the fines, they are barely an incentive."
Funny that the NY Public Library is actually a bit of a laggard in this respect. Lots of other libraries, beyond the cities listed in the article, have done the same, and have not seen an uptick in overdue materials.
I do on line library. Audio books and ebooks. I absolutely love this service because I live in a rural area. I love that bigger city libraries offer kids and adults amazing things to do. And it’s free! Library rock! ❤️👌

Who goes to Public Libraries now days?
Since when does equity mean a lack of accountability and no responsibility for personal choices? This has nothing to do equity. Chose to check out a book, chose to bring it back, or pay the fine. If you can’t pay the fine either return the book or don’t check one out at all.
Why not just keep the books?
Other cities have done this for years. Turned out fine.
Chicago already did that about 2-3 years ago.
