The new shelter was the winner of an Aldine ISD competition among 80 teams, whittled to eight who made formal presentations to a design committee at Metro. Baltazar, Sergio Garcia, and Eliezer Guillen won the job with their geometric design that’s six-sided and focuses on offering maximum coverage along the tight sidewalk. Baltazar, 21, now a marketing major at the University of Houston, said the hardest part was fitting the space with something that could protect riders.

“We see this as an investment,” Metro board chairman Sanjay Ramabhadran said, noting the agency just celebrated its 2,500th renovated bus stop.
