Akron Children's Hospital photographer Ted Stevens has carved out a very special niche — taking photos of children who don’t have long to live and giving them for free to bereaved families.

Akron Children's Hospital photographer Ted Stevens has been on staff for 30 years. Behind him is a collage of some of the photos he's taken, including some of medical missions to Haiti.AKRON, Ohio — Right before her birth in 2011, Sofia Dente suffered severe brain damage in the womb.

Stevens’ work as a hospital photographer goes beyond taking pictures for websites and physician’s presentations. He’s at children’s bedsides photographing them being silly, and poses them for family portraits. It was just one example of how Stevens, 52, uses his talent to give grace to Akron Children’s grieving parents.

“I’m the sort of a person that needs to do something different every 20 minutes,” Stevens said. “In this job, thereSome days — when he documents injuries suffered by abused children — are grim. He’ll create pictures of tiny toes cradled in dad’s large hand, and bears witness to the terrible moment a child is taken off life support.

“Yeah, it’s hard,” Stevens said. “But It’s nothing compared to what it’s like for the person on the other side of the camera.” Akron Children’s is one of the few area hospitals to offer families photos taken by a professional staff photographer.Max, left, and Peter Stenz pose for a portrait taken by Akron Children's photographer Ted Stevens.
