Older adults without heart disease shouldn't take daily aspirin to prevent a first heart attack or stroke, according to draft guidance from an influential health group. The recommendation would be in line with advice from other medical groups.

Doctors have long recommended daily low-dose aspirin for many patients who already have had a heart attack or stroke. The task force guidance does not change that advice.

The independent panel of disease-prevention experts analyzes medical research and literature and issues periodic advice on measures to help keep Americans healthy. Newer studies and a re-analysis of older research prompted the updated advice, Wong said. Block, who is not on the task force, recently switched one of her patients from aspirin to a cholesterol-lowering statin drug because of the potential harms. The patient, 70-year-old Richard Schrafel, has high blood pressure and knows about his heart attack risks. Schrafel, president of a paperboard-distribution business, said he never had any ill effects from aspirin, but he is taking the new guidance seriously.

Follow what your specific doctor tells you. Mine said to take one daily. Until he says otherwise, I'll take one daily.

Doctor's went from telling my 80 year old father to take one a day, to recently telling him that new evidence says not to take them, and they can actually cause you harm!

So, the science wasn't settled now was it? Follow the science if you can keep up with it's twists, turns and double-backs.

The way I read it - they want you to take the latest pharma alternative instead of aspirin.

These people are talking about older adults who don't already have heart conditions and they didn't make that point across I just saw it on the internet they're not talking about people with heart conditions older adults without heart conditions I would call that misinformation

I feel like clots are much higher of a risk to die from immediately than any bleeding from a low dose aspirin.

What? How have I been taking these Geesh!

See this is how people get misunderstandings like misinformation these people whoever they are didn't clarify that they're not referring to people with already heart problems when they say don't take a daily aspirin they're talking about people that don't have heart conditions

This is really a disservice and pedestrian reporting to publish this story using the source: “an influential health guidelines group.” This is contributing to our erosion of trust in medical advice. Please update the story with a credible named source.

It's real hard to trust anything coming from the medical profession these days....

1 cup of actual coffee 1 glass of red wine.

So you’re saying the ‘science’ is never really settled 🤔

Do what your dr advises. These experts have 20 opinions in 2 days.

I take 75 mg aspirin once every 3 week. Is that bad for me

Wait, I read about this at least two years ago. I know two people who stopped aspirin back then because it was no longer recommended by their doctors.

Yes you can reverse heart disease. Plant based diet. NO OIL (except some nuts). No processed foods. It takes effort America. Do you want to put all your health decisions in a for profit healthcare system?

Who the f* takes daily aspirin to prevent such a thing?! Good food, a good sleep, aaand have fun! selenium zinc

what if i just have headaches all the time

I thought we already knew this

Most adults shouldn't take daily aspirin to prevent heart attack, panel saysShould you take a low-dose aspirin for heart health? The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is changing its guidance, saying most people don't need the daily pill. What! Even Antivaxxers 🤣 If cardiovascular disease (heart disease) is the leading cause of death of American adults, then how do you justify the statement “most” adults shouldn’t take a daily aspirin? This is problematic reporting. Word choice is crucial and your responsibility as a Nat’s news source The new guidance is same as the old guidance (preventative aspirin for those at high risk of MI, but low risk of bleeding) the only difference is the age group. Now 40 to 59. Previously 50+. The real news here is that high risk people in 40s need to start and seniors should stop
