Most adults shouldn't take daily aspirin to prevent heart attack, panel says.

The updated guidance recommends that adults in their 40s and 50s only take aspirin as a preventive measure if their doctors determine they are atand that aspirin may lower the risk without significant risk of bleeding. People ages 60 or older are now advised not to start taking aspirin to prevent first heart attacks or strokes.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and according to the most recent data available,Aspirin acts as an anticoagulant, meaning it helps to preventfrom forming. A clot that cuts off blood flow to the heart leads to a heart attack; one that cuts off blood flow to the brain causes a stroke. The idea behind taking a daily low-dose aspirin was to lower the risk of such clots, lowering the risk of heart attack or stroke.

“Aspirin only has a benefit if someone is at increased risk for heart disease. They shouldn’t be starting just because they have reached a certain age,” said a member of the 16-person task force, Dr. Chien-Wen Tseng, a professor of family medicine at the John H. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.

Michos said the widely known recommendations that endorsed daily aspirin use for decades were based on research conducted before other prevention approaches were available. Still, the anti-clotting benefits of aspirin do outweigh the risk of bleeding for many people. Michos and Tseng emphasize that they should talk to their doctors about whether or not a small daily dose of aspirin may still be beneficial.

As a Canadian, I've never heard of anyone being prescribed to take a daily aspirin to prevent a FIRST heart attack. Who decided to recommend this and why are they Americans?

Who said this fauci?

I can't wait to hear what patented pharmaceutical they recommend we take instead. I guess aspirin doesn't make anyone money anymore...

I don't know about 'most adults' but I take ibuprofen every day because I'm 41 and everything is starting to hurt now 😂

A doctor on Facebook told me that beaver tail fungus cream helps prevent heart attacks.

Stay tuned for next week's article about how everyone should take aspirin

Americas heartthrob, in his own words: (Yes. I know. For clarification, just replace “mask” with “aspirin”). Enjoy

Surprised !

Stop eating meat can help, just saying

The new guidance is same as the old guidance (preventative aspirin for those at high risk of MI, but low risk of bleeding) the only difference is the age group. Now 40 to 59. Previously 50+. The real news here is that high risk people in 40s need to start and seniors should stop

If cardiovascular disease (heart disease) is the leading cause of death of American adults, then how do you justify the statement “most” adults shouldn’t take a daily aspirin? This is problematic reporting. Word choice is crucial and your responsibility as a Nat’s news source
