With arguments beginning this week, local experts say states where abortion is legal have to pay attention

Local reproductive-health experts said they are concerned about how the U.S. Supreme Court might rule on access to the abortion pill mifepristone — and what the ramifications could be for California — in a case in which the justices are set to hear arguments Tuesday.

The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine’s lawsuit sought to limit access to the pill to patients who are no more than seven weeks pregnant, rather than the current 10. It also targeted the FDA’s decision to loosen restrictions on the medication in recent years, which made it so health-care providers can prescribe it through telehealth appointments.

On Monday, researchers published a study in JAMA that found the number of abortions using pills acquired outside of the formal medical system increased fourfold in the six months after the Dobbs decision. In anticipation of ruling tightening restrictions, Newsom’s office told The Examiner in a statement Monday that state officials have begun distributing misoprostol from an emergency stockpile the governor created last year.
