CLEVELAND, Ohio - Ohio Department of Transportation officials. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and AAA representatives held a news conference Thursday to highlight their awareness campaign ahead of the busy solar eclipse weekend.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected in Northeast Ohio for several major events; including, the April 8 solar eclipse, the NCAA Women’s Final Four Tournament, the Guardians home opener and the Cleveland International Film Festival.“For any motorists who plan on traveling during the moments of the eclipse is recommended to maintain your focus on the road. Do not attempt to look at the sun or look at the eclipse,” said OSHP Sgt. Bridget Matt.
Sgt. Matt also said if you want to view it, pull off an exit and park in a parking lot, do not watch it on the side of the road or highway.“When the eclipse hits don’t forget it’s going to be so dark, you’re going to need to make sure your lights are on,” said AAA spokesperson Jim Garrity. If you’re attending an eclipse event, show up early and stay late. Officials said this will help break up traffic.
According to OSHP, from 2019 through 2023, there were 55,855 crashes in Ohio that involved one or more drivers who were distracted by something within their vehicle. Of these, 170 were fatal crashes that resulted in 185 deaths.Property owner stunned after $500,000 house built on wrong lot: ‘Are you kidding me?’Know before you go: total solar eclipse travel safety tips
