Najib Mohammadi had high hopes for his life in the United States when he, his pregnant wife Susan and two small children left Afghanistan in July 2021.

Reuters has followed the Mohammadi family for their first year in the United States, witnessing their ups and downs as they rebuilt their lives. Susan Mohammadi looks over a Dari to English picture book to practice her English while she takes care of her two-month-old son, Yusuf Mohammadi, and daughter Zahra, 3, at their home in Sacramento, Calif., July 12, 2022.Once his financial situation is more stable, Mohammadi also hopes to be able to afford therapy to deal with trauma from his army days.

Their baby, Yusuf, was born healthy and "100% American." Susan jokingly calls the baby "Mr. President."

Thank goodness he wasn't assisting the US government while in Afghanistan, they could have been droned.

There are still American citizens stranded in Afghanistan. WorstPresidentEver

All refugees left their country becoz of suppression and injustice. I wish Najib M. and his wife Susan live in peace and happiness. May their children get good education, grow into open minded, intelligent citizen. May they never get influenced by any radical groups of any kind.

As difficult as their new life is, it must be orders of magnitude better than what they left.

Should have moved to a nice country in Europe ?

Why would anybody come here? It's full of racist fascist sexist bigots who are ruining the planet. Surely there are better places to go...
