Physicists just created a auxetic nanomaterial that could lead to better strain gauges and wearable technologies.

A PhD student and physicist from Western Science just created a new nanomaterial that might get us to wearable technologies even sooner.

Stocek said that they were “specifically looking to create a two-dimensional nanomaterial from tungsten semi-carbide,” which, as a material, has many practical applications in cutting tools, ammunition, and even jewelry.Most materials have a positive Poisson’s ratio, meaning when stretched, they get thinner laterally , but in an auxetic material, they get thicker. They expand to the applied forces.

As we learned in basic physics, a solid can liquify or become a gas. We don’t hear plasma as an option, though it’s the fourth state of matter.
