project is an ever-evolving creative tribute to the agonies and the ecstasies of Black American life—from police brutality and civil rights activism to the close bonds of community. At a powerful moment of reckoning both across the country and around the world, it serves as a living document, regularly reflecting poignant new imagery and texts from leading Black contemporary artists.
In 2010, my husband Noah and I had just moved the area and had to drive through Malibu on our way to the studio in Boyle Heights. Our hearts would break every time we would see Mitrice’s family and friends roadside with signs asking if anyone had seen their daughter and friend. Noah and I would always acknowledge her spirit when we drove through that canyon. We knew she wasn’t coming home and that her body was somewhere below in the brush. We knew that any time a black person has a run-in with the police, there is always a chance of harassment or death. We felt in our hearts that the police were complicit or even guilty of murder.
The project was initially commissioned by the Park Avenue Armory, in partnership with the National Black Theatre. It is a multidisciplinary exploration, titledto mark the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment: “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” This is a critical year for women, and this series recognizes the diversity of the artists and the women they celebrate.
I, along with Zalika Azim, Tsedaye Makonnen, Nekisha Durrett, Rose DeSiano, Sama Alshaibi, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Renee Cox, Lorie Novak, Yelaine Rodriguez, Adama Delphine Fawundu, and Susan kae Grant, approach the topic in diverse ways and all of the works are inspired by a legacy of activism by both the artists and their subjects.
Brilliant.
'Black' American life. Like it's a parallel fucking universe, separate and distinct from the 'other' American lives. We see the bullshit your trying to pull.
